signs of roof problems: rotted shingles

Broken Arrow Roof Repair-- Rotted Shingles
In most cases, shingles have a cellulose core that is covered with layers of asphalt to provide protection. When shingles rot, this layer disintegrates due to moisture damage, so the shingle literally falls apart. Rot is a sign of extensive damage to your roof, and it is likely to affect a large part of it. If possible, contact a professional immediately to avoid further damage.

how can i tell if my shingles are rotted?

1. The shingles fall apart easily. Whether caused by the local climate or simply poor attic ventilation, over time, older roofs can be exposed to high humidity and moisture, which can cause roof rot. The outer layer of asphalt on rotting asphalt shingles will deteriorate due to water damage. Over time, the remaining shingles will gradually fall apart, causing the exposed roof sections to become compromised. Your roofing shingle may have rotted or decayed if it falls apart easily or tears easily in your hands.
2. There are missing or broken shingles.
It is sometimes impossible to get up onto the roof and check if your shingles are tearing apart. There are, however, other signs that you should look out for. Take note of missing or broken shingles, especially missing shingles that don't seem to be the result of a windstorm. If you see a shingle falling off your roof, you are in the early stages of roof decay. Take a closer look at any shingles that have fallen to the ground.
3. Your shingles are curling or appear bald.
If shingles are starting to rot, look for other signs. An indication that your roof is suffering from weather damage (and allowing moisture into the attic) is curled shingles. They could be rotting and potentially causing serious damage to your roof. Bald shingles with granules missing are another indication. Older shingles have a tendency to do this, but it also signals the shingle has been exposed to water for so long that it is losing its adhesive properties and could fall off.

4: Your roofline has visible bulging.
If you notice any weird bulges or bubbles on your roofline, pay attention to them. Inspect the roofline for warping or buckling. These are signs that moisture has penetrated beneath your shingles and is causing rot damage to not only your roof, but also to the plywood beneath the deck (which supports your whole roof). Damage of this sort should be handled immediately by a roofing professional who can provide you with advice on repairs, insurance, and other factors.
5. Water pools on your roof after it rains.
Your shingles may be rotting if you see water standing on the roof after the rain for a long time. You should also look for moss growing on your roof shingles if your slope is steep, as these are warning signs that the roof is leaking more moisture than usual.
6. Moss and mold growth.

When your roof is covered in moss and mold, your shingles can pull apart, allowing water to enter your attic. From there, water will quickly leak into your walls and ceiling. What can you do to detect this? Inspecting your shingles will reveal algae and green moss growing on them. Any amount can damage your roof. Start by inspecting where water usually pools on your roof. These places provide ideal conditions for the beginnings of shingle rot.
